Beautiful Cape Elizabeth extends 12 miles to the open ocean and is rimmed with sandy beaches and ragged shores lining the Casco Bay. The overall area is roughly 15 square miles. A 2000 census figure puts the population just over 9000. Cape Elizabeth continues to draw visitors because of its preserved rural feel and its limited commercial development. Most of the commercial business lies along the shores. Gardeners will also enjoying the longest growing season in the state. The town does not have a large growth rate but may have a large housing turnover in the next ten years due to an elderly population of 16% being 65 years and older.

Cape Elizabeth High School is a public school that consists of 600 students. It offers college preparatory, vocational and special education for all students. The school’s facilities include a large gymnasium and a six-lane, 25 yard pool. Outdoor facilities include tennis courts, baseball, softball and multi-purpose fields. There is also a 6 lane track surrounding the soccer field. In 2004 Cape Elizabeth High School received the Blue Ribbon School Award due to the student’s high scores in mathematics and reading for Maine state tests. The school complex was built in 1969, renovated in 2005-06. The average class size is 22 students. The school offers many extracurricular activities including clubs, groups, athletics and arts.

Cape Elizabeth Middle School offers courses for students in grade 5-8. An extensive interscholastic and extracurricular program is offered throughout the school year. Fifth grade students are introduced to band instruments and to the choral program. For those interested in the seventh and eighth grade sports program, plenty of choices exist. Students are also offered choices with Community Services programming. The entire building complex underwent a major renovation/new building project completed in 1995.

At the Pond Cove Elementary School specialists for physical education, art, music, speech therapists, special education and counseling services, resource teachers and the media center director serve a wide range of pupil needs. Recent changes in curriculum reflect developmental early childhood philosophy. Classes at Pond Cove are kept small to encourage personal and supportive teacher/student interaction. Students are offered the opportunity to learn French or Spanish once they reach the third grade.

Cape Elizabeth Family Fun Day: Held at Fort Williams during the end of June each year, Family Fun Day is a day of fun, with games, food, music, and an exciting fireworks display for people of all ages.

Beach to Beacon 10K: Joan Benoit Samuelson, the winner of the Women’s Olympic Marathon in 1984, was raised in Cape Elizabeth. Now retired from running, she conducts the annual Beach to Beacon road race every spring.
