Portland Maine Recreation
There is a 3.5 mile trail that follows the shore of Back Bay, a tidal basin in Portland. This trail is often occupied by runners, walkers, bikers and occasionally rollerbladers. Casco Bay Lines connects Portland to six different islands out of Casco Bay. They also offer scenic cruises, summer time music cruises, private charters and lobster bakes. The Maine State Pier hosts the annual Baystock Music Festival, where top recording artists perform every year. The Cumberland County Civic Center is also home of the Portland Pirates hockey team, the soon to be Maine Red Claws basketball team and where a variety of other concerts and trade shows take place. Hadlock Field is home of the Portland Sea Dogs, a AAA baseball team that is an affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
Portland Maine Entertainment
The city of Portland offers a free concert series during the summer months. The series is called Alive at Five and starts at 5 o’clock pm on Thursday nights at Monument Square. The Maine Songwriters Association also puts on a weekday concert series. These performances take place at noon every Friday in various parks in Portland. Music is only one of the arts that this city exhibits. Portland has been ranked number 7 of 100 Best Art Towns in America. There are a large number of studios, galleries and other places exhibiting art around the town. A weekday Performance series also takes place on Tuesday’s at noon in parks around the city. These include shows of music, dancing, magic and more! The Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine sponsors Kids Activity Day during Wednesday’s in the month of July. For an hour every Wednesday children can listen to a story and then make crafts that go along with the book. The summer months are not the only time for outdoor entertainment in the city. During the winter months parks host outdoor skating arenas. Maine Brewers Festival, where Maine Breweries bring their micro brews for ticket buyers to sample takes place at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Another spot for entertainment in Portland is the Comedy Connection. This comedy club is where Maine comedian Bob Marley often performs.
Portland Maine Old Port
Old Port is Portland’s historical waterfront district and is known for its shopping, dinning and entertainment. The cobblestone streets in Old Port take you past unique shops, delicious lobster serving restaurants and exciting places for a night scene that you will not forget. Every year in June, the Old Port Festival takes place in Portland. This is Maine’s largest one day festival. The festival features music, arts and crafts, food, shopping and fun.
