The town of Yarmouth prides itself on being a New England town with old homes and small businesses. Yarmouth is located along the beautiful Royal River and has a commercial base along US Route One. With a variety of shops and restaurants in Yarmouth, the much larger city of Portland is easily accessible located only ten miles Southwest of Yarmouth.
Demographics, Population, and Income
Yarmouth consists of a population of about 8,300 people. In 2000, the US census provided that the median household income in Yarmouth was just over $72,000 and the average age is 40 years old.
Yarmouth School District is made up of four public schools. The William H. Rowe School serves young children in kindergarten and first grade. This school is dedicated to educating young children and adequately prepares them for Yarmouth Elementary School for grades two through four. Harrison Middle School educates 442 students grades five through eight. 490 students between ninth and twelfth grade study at Yarmouth High School and 90 percent of those students continue on to higher education after their time here. North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) is a co-ed college-preparatory school with 300 students currently enrolled.
Attractions in Yarmouth
Outdoor activities are plentiful in Yarmouth. Royal River Park located in the center of town offers many scenic walking trails and picnic spots along its 40 acres of land. There is also a performance area where live music takes place for free over the summer months. The Beth Condon Memorial Pathway starts on Portland Street and follows US Route One It then joins the Royal River walkway and ends at Forest Falls Drive. The pathway provides safe and easy access to the variety of shops and businesses along US Route One. Pratt’s Brook Park encompasses 220 acres of woods, within which are seven miles of trails for walking and cross country skiing. The newest addition to Yarmouth’s park system is the Bayview Estuary Preserve which is made up of 35 acres of undeveloped land along the Royal River. Here there is almost a half-mile of river frontage, forested uplands and salt and freshwater wetlands. The Toddy Brook Golf Course located in North Yarmouth is also a great place for outdoor recreation.
